Feel at ease

Camping ‘t Weergors is a family business with more than 60 years of history. It is run by brother and sister Arda and Rob Riedijk, together with their parents Frans and Dickie Riedijk. They took over from Frans' parents, Leen and Nel Riedijk, who laid the foundations for the campsite in 1964. Originally, Leen and Nel started on a small field next to their dairy farm, welcoming campers from Rotterdam.

Developments around the Delta Works, the growth of Hellevoetsluis and the emerging demand for recreation made them decide in 1964 to leave most of the farm behind and make the switch to recreation. Over the years, the farm grew to about 16 hectares.

What does 't Weergors mean?

The name ‘t Weergors is closely linked to the rich history of Hellevoetsluis. As early as the late 15th century, the polders ‘Het Grote Weergors’ and ‘Het Kleine Weergors’ were located on either side of the area that would later become the fortified town of Hellevoetsluis. Today, Het Grote Weergors is known as Quackgors. A ‘gors’ refers to land that floods at high tide and becomes dry again at low tide.

With the completion of the Haringvliet Dam in 1971, the tide came to an end and the water in the Haringvliet became fresh. In 2019, however, the locks were partially reopened, allowing the tide and salt water to find their way again, to improve water quality.

'Peace and rest is my Lust'

The farmhouse that houses restaurant ‘t Karrewiel was built in its current form in 1869. There was a farm on this site as early as the 16th century. Remnants of it were found during excavation work. The restaurant area used to be where fodder was stored. The cows stood in the winter period in the part where the café is now. The kitchen was the horse stable. The farm ‘Peace and Rest is my Lust’ has been owned by the same family since 1917.

Green business

We think it is important to do our bit for a sustainable world. One of the ways we do this is by generating our own energy with 400 solar panels. We also store part of this energy. In addition, all buildings and grounds are lit with LED lamps and all taps, toilets and showers in sanitary facilities and rental accommodation are water-saving. We do green management and terrain landscaping mainly with indigenous planting. The fishpond that we created in the 1980s is now a fully-fledged nature area appreciated by deer and spoonbills, and the wildflower meadow is an oasis for insects.
